Her illness grows progressively worse.1845- Poe publishes "The Raven" in the New York evening mirror, it is very successful.January 30, 1847- Poe's wife Virginia dies of tuberculosis at their home in the Bronx. Poe has been so despondent during the final months of her illness that friends thought he was going insane. The loss of his wife sends Poe into a downward spiral of alcoholism.November, 1848- Poe proposes to a poet named Sarah Helen Whitman, who agrees on the condition that he quit drinking. Poe can't live up to the promise, and Whitman calls off the engagement a month later.October 7,1849- After being found unconscious in a Baltimore gutter, Edgar Allan Poe is taken to the hospital and pronounced dead of causes still unknown. He is buried at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Baltimore. January 19, 1809- Poe is born in Boston, MA to Elizabeth Amold Poe and David Poe Jr.December, 1810- Poe's father deserts the family leaving his wife with 3 children, she soon after becomes I'll with tuberculosis.December, 1811- Both of poe's parents die from tuberculosis forcing the 3 children to split up. February 28th, 1829- Poes's foster mother Francis Allan dies.1831- Poe is court- martialed and dismissed from the military, he publishes several anonymous short stories and a book of poems.May 16, 1836- Poe now 27, marrys 13 year old cousin Virginia Clemm.July,1838- Poes first novel, " The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym" is published. In the raven it begins with a man alone in his chamber, when suddenly he hears someone tapping at his door. He gets up to look and nobody is there but his echoing voice. A raven appears on his bust above his door and with every question asked he spoke never more. The rest of the poem the man drives himself in to insanity because the raven won't provide answer. Poe is very good at creating suspense and a dark presence with his work which is why the raven is so popular because it is one of the first of this genre.
