Created with Fabric.js 1.4.5 Parallax's What is a parallax? Definition of Parallax: is a displacement or difference in the apparent position of an object viewed along two different lines of sight, and is measured by the angle or semi-angle of inclination between those two lines. In other words a parallax is a change in position from two viewpoints, and you notice a movement in an object from one view to the other. The object or star that moves the most from each veiw is the closest to earth. We can calculate the distance of the star that moved from the parallax angle. In 2011 NASA found the star named Wise, and in 2013-1014 they found Spitzer using the technique of parallax angles. Fact If our sun was the size of an orange and placed in NYC... The closest star to us, which is also the size of an orange, would be placed insouthern california. If you were to travel at the speed of light towards the sun for 1 auor 93 million miles, it would take you 8.23 minutes. Try this! Compare Cool! Stick your thumb out arms length away from your face. Close one eye and do not move your thumb or head. Then close your other eye and open your other eye. Observe the movement of your thumb from one eye to the other. Now move your thumb closer and repeat the process. Which one moved more? Your thumb closer or your thumb farther? Closer right! This is how nasa finds stars using parallax technique. Your eyes represent the two points of view from the earth around the sun, and your thumb represents a near by star! Vaughn Campos Period 8
