The Allies consisted of the U.K, France, the Russian Empire, and later the USA. The Central Powers consisted mainly of Germany and Austria-Hungary. the First World War began. It joined, because Germany started sinking its ships and submarines that were sent to give the US's alliances (enemies of Germany) supplies. That was the official reason for US involvement. However, the US also wanted to stop the German empire from expanding. Why did the war begin? the Archduke of Austria and his wife were visiting Bosnia­Herzegovina, and a Serbian teenager killed them both. Austria, which had been wanting to declare war on Serbia, used the fact that the boy was a Serbian to declare war on Serbia. This caused alliances of both countries to become involved, thus beginning WW1. What was the purpose of the war? The purpose of the war was to expand empires (central powers goal) or to stop empires from expanding (allies goal). General John J. Pershing (USA) Tactical air was one of the new technologies that made WWI a new age of weaponry. Both sides were racing to design mono and biplane fighters that could hold heavy bombs and machine guns while maintaining (or, at this point, having) manoeuvrability.
