Created with Fabric.js 1.4.5 Many believe that use of a tourniquet will result in limb loss, FALSE As shown here two tourniquets are used to stop hemorrhaging on thelower left extremity The Tourniquet when applied properly stops hemorrhaging,by applying pressure to the artery against the long bone. This effectively cuts off circulationto the extremity. Studies have shown a tourniquet may be left on for up to 2 hours with out doing excessive damageto the surroundingtissue or extremity. Otherstudies have shown that tourniquets have been left on longer with out loss of limb (Monrita 218) Photo: Samantha Hubbard Photo: Samantha Hubbard The fear of tourniquets lies in the days of the civil war. Evacuations were not available, and tourniquets would be left on for days. This caused infection which sometimes lead to amputation. This was over 200 years ago. (Risk)(Monrita 208) . Civilian Emergency Medical Personnel follow 5 Steps when dealing with hemorrhaging of an extremity. Each step is done in order, if one fails, the EMT moves to the next. 1. Apply direct pressure to the wound 2. Elevate the extremity above the heart 3. Apply a pressure dressing to the wound 4. Apply pressure to pressure point stopping blood flow to the area 5. If all above fails, apply tourniquet(Bailey) These five steps can take up time and resources. If hemorrhaging is not stopped the patientwill go into shock, and die. A tourniquetcan be applied in under 30 seconds.
