Symptoms Inheritance The cause of Tay-Sachs diseaseis a missing enzyme that resultsin the accumulation of fattysubstance in the nervous system. It is also caused by the defective hexosaminidase on chromosome 15. If both parents are carriers of the disease and the child inheritsthe Hex-A gene from them, then thechild will have Tay-Sachs disease. The disease is recessive so the chances of inheriting it are very slim. Tay-Sachs disease is not very prominent in people. Only one out of two hundred and fifty people get it in the general population. But statistics change for other ethnicities. Around one out of twenty seven Jews, French Canadians, and Louisiana Cajuns inherit this disease. Irish Americans have a one out of fifty chance to inherit this too. Treatment There is no cure to this disease, only medication that can suppress symptoms. Feeding tubes can also be used against respiratory problems and going to see a respiratory therapist can help reduce the mucus built up in the lungs. Medication can also be used to reduce seizures and physical exercise can help reduce joint stiffness. Statistics Tay-Sachs Disease
