Sea otters do not have blubber so they have to groom their hair often so that air will stay in its hair. How did the sea otter species become endangered and how did they come back? Sea otters became endangered because of the fur trade in the 1700s. They were hunted for food and their pelts by many Russians, and because their furs were so valuable and the number of sea otters were dropping the sea otters became protected by the International Fur Seal Treaty in 1911.
