Purpose of the respiratory system The primary function of the respiratory system is to supply the blood with oxygen in order for the blood to deliver oxygen to all parts of the body. The respiratory system does this through breathing. When we breathe, we inhale oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide. Respiratory System Processes of the respiratory system Breathing occurs when we take oxygen into the body (lungs) and push carbon dioxide out the body. Breathing therefore occurs in two phases.Inhalation - drawing in airExhalation - pushing air outGaseous exchange takes place at two locations by a process called diffusion:In the alveoli, oxygen diffuses into blood from the lungs and carbon dioxide diffuses from the blood back into the lungs. At the body tissue oxygen diffuses from the blood tap and hold to changethis text! tap and hold to changethis text!
