The Libyan Revolution Government's Main Leader Muammar Gaddafi Dates: February to October of 2011 Rebel's Main Leader Mustafa Abdul Jalil -The people of Libya are mostly Arab -Common religion:Muslim-Speak Libyan Arabic -Commomallities allowed the people able to band together easily. -The people wanted a free government -Saw the movements of Egypt and Tunisia in Arab Spring;wanted the same type of free government -Felt that their government was too oppressive against the people which took away their rights -Libya's ruler was extremely power hungry and self-obsessed. -He would not give up power for 42 years -Constantly stirred up trouble -People eventually got sick of his general egotistical rule -His attitude/leadership contributed twoard revolution Conflict -The Arab Spring influenced many people through internet and media sharing websites to revolt. -Specifically, Facebook was used to organize events and protestsin the revolution. - Full-scale revolt started after military and police fired upon peaceful protesters in Benghazi-Citizens then formed up against the government into a group called the National Transitional Council -Peoples frustrations built as their ignorant leader was in power for longer,-With the rise of social media, thousands of people could be easily informed and rallied for the cause -People were convinced that revolt was their only option because of how ignorant their current leader was -Bloodshed and chaos ensued after protest as Gaddafis forces began firing on opposing citizens -Military took over several cities, including Tripoli and Benghazi -Both forces were extremely hostile towards each other-Government had no intention on negotiating conflict-Both sides would rather die than come up with compromise -Eventually the capital, Tripoli, was captured by rebels a few months into the revolution - Gaddafi was killed trying to flee the country. -His death marked a new era where the government could start over and create a free society -ultimate change in government from dictatorship to electable government Moderate phase- -Protests in Benghazi-Formation of National Transitional Council-Protests in Zawiya-Organization of rebellion events through Facebook Radical Phase- -Gaddafi taking over cities-Rebel control of Tripoli-Gaddafis attempted escape from Sirte-Execution of Gaddafi 5 terms of oppression:-King: Gaddafi referred to himself as the people's king instead of a dictator-Sirte: palace where Gaddafi lived -Suppression: how the government attacked the rebels-Martyr: What Gaddafi wanted to be if he died in the fights-Gaddafi: symbol of leadership in the country Terms of Revolution: -Facebook: Means of gathering for protest-Mustafa Abdul Jalil: Leader of revolution-National Transitional Council: new govt. after revolution-Protests: Caused an imbalance of power-Arab Spring: Phenomenon that sprung Arab countries into momentous power changes Current State:-On July 7 2012 parliament elections were held after 40 years of tyrant rule-Government is more free than previous and allows citizen rights-Needs of the people were met because a free government with elected representatives was put in place-Eventually government changed to suit the needs of the people in 2014 with 200 elected members of government both men and women -New constitution is being drawn up-Currently considered an electoral democracy
