He died on February 18, 1957 in New Jersey.Russell studied Astronomy at Princeton, obtaining his B.A. in 1897 and doctorate in 1899. From 1903 to 1095, he worked at the Cambridge Observatory with Arthur Robert Hinks. He became Instructor of Astronomy at Princeton from 1905 to 1908, then assistant professor from 1908 to 1911, then professor from 1911 to 1927, and then finally research professor from 1927 to 1947. He married Lucy May Cole in 1908 and had four children.
