Created with Fabric.js 1.4.5 TRUE EQUALITY IS IMPOSSIBLE. Rebecca Fontana "Harrison Bergeron" by Kurt Vonnegut "Eye of the Beholder,"The Twilight Zone Due to the fact that no single person is the same, complete and total equality is impossible to achieve. In order to give the illusion of perfect equality, people must be disguised, which is shown in these two examples. In this short story, whichtakes place in the year2081, the governmenthas attempted to make every person perfectly equal. In this episode of The Twilight Zone, the people live in a societyin which they have been operated on so everyone looks the same. The government controlspeople with devices knownas handicaps, and even withthe handicaps, people stillare not equal. The handi-caps merely just disguise the fact that not everyone is equal. This quote shows thateven with the handicaps, there is still inequality. The handicap only disguises it. "And George, while his intelligence was way above normal, had a little mental handicap radio in his ear. Hewas required by law to wear it at all times. It was tuned toa government transmitter. Every twenty seconds or so, the transmitter would send out some sharp noise to keeppeople like George from taking unfair advantage of their brains." In addition, when HarrisonBergeron took off hishandicaps on live television and showedthe society how different it would beif they did not have them,he showed once againthat the handicaps wereonly a disguise to the fact that no one is trulyequal, no matter howmuch handicaps theypossess, because everyperson is unique tothemselves. The people in this societybelieve in the messagethat "beauty is in the eyeof the beholder." The surgeries act as a disguise just as the hand-icaps act as one in"Harrison Bergeron." Thepeople wish to be equal,so they make them lookequal only on the outside, rather than on the inside, since it is impossible to change someone from within. The people conformto make their message true,so no one will love another justfor their looks, but rather what is inside them. Not everyone is compatible with these procedures. Miss Tyler, forexample, is considered to have a disability, because she cannot be operated on due to her beauty. Rebecca Fontana These reasons prove justhow impossible it is forevery person to be completely equal. Everyperson has something about them that makes them different, and to smother that fact is not achieving perfect equality.
