VHLis an autosomal dominant inheritance meaning all you need is one copy of the gene is order to get the disease. Von Hippel-Lindau syndrome (VHL) is a hereditary syndromethat causes malignant diseases. VHL is associated with blood vessel tumors of the brain, spinal cord and eye. Causes VonHippel-Lindau Syndrome VHL Symptoms Many times Von Hippel-Lindau syndrome does not have any symptoms, but whenthey are shown these might be some of the possible symptoms: • Excessive sweating• Headaches• Rapid or irregular heartbeats• Feelings of anxiety, panic and fear• Pale skin• Dizziness or lightheadedness • Tremor• Weight loss• Vomiting 50%chance of beign infected Children with parents that have the VHL genehave a 50% chance of getting the disease. Cures and/or Treatment There is no cure for VHL but there aremany programs that can help you manage the disease. Examples ofsome screening programs are: • Yearly eye examination to look for retinal tumors• Physical examinations• Urine test• Abdominal ultrasound to look at multiple organs • MRI of the brain and spine every two years. Because VHL causes so many tumors,scientist and pharmaceutical companiesare working on a drug that can managetumor growth. Tumors can also be keptsmall with proper medical treatment and little surgical intervention. Growths may develop in the retina of the eye, certain areas of the brain or other areas of the nervous system. These tumours are benign. Other types of growth may develop in the spinal cord, the adrenal glands, the kidneys or the pancreas.
