The April Fools' Day tsunami in1946 was one of the most destructive tragedies ever to hitHawaii. It made scientists startresearching tsunamis & predicting when they'd happen. Since then, many lives have been saved from tsunamis, but we still have a lot to learn about these ocean monsters. The region that encircles the Pacific Ocean is nicknamed the "Ring of Fire", because more strong earthquakes andvolcanoes occur here than any other place on Earth. The tsunami on Black Sunday2004 in Thailand Contrary to what many surfers may think, you cannot surf a tsunami. Instead of forming a curl like typical waves, a tsunami wave is more like a flood. No one knows how manysurfers have been killed trying to ride atsunami. Only two people are known to have surfed a tsunami. They both weren't lookingfor "the ride of a lifetime", but were simplytrying to survive the tsunami. By: Gail Langer Karwoski Danielle Sun
