Knowledge is Power TRUTH versus HAPPINESS Huxley addresses another theme when he has Mustafa Mondtalk to Helmholtz, Bernard, and John and reveals that those who value knowledge and truth are exiled to an island. "But chastity means passion, chastity means neurasthenia.And passion and neurasthenia mean instability. And Instabilitymeans the end of civilization" (page 237). -Mustafa Mond KNOWLEDGE Both John and Mustafa haveknowledge, and therefore power. John's knowledge lets him see the flawsin society and voice his opinion,but Mustafa uses his knowledge tocontrol and clone society. The result is that society is under Mustafa's control and is plaguedwith false happiness. John, however, becomes deeply troubled and depressed by what his knowledgehas allowed him to realize. In the end, he commits suicide in order to escapehis tortured world.
