This satellite was called the Sputnik. Americans were afraid that the Soviets would use this advancement as a new war tactic. $ Funding for the United States was denied several times andalso was cancelled becauselaunches were not successful.But in the 1960's NASA's budget was increased by 500%which allowed for great newadvancements in Project Apollowhich was a lunar landing program. The Space Race was a competition between the United States and the Soviet Union that started around the 1950's. In this time period, the two countries fought to see who could make the most advancements towards exploring space to prove their supremacy. The United States launched their first Earth satellite in 1958. This satellite, Explorer I, was designed by the United States Army. President Eisenhower passed the creation of NASA which was an organization that was dedicated to exploring space. In 1959, the Soviet Union launched the Luna 2. This was the first space probe to touch the moon. In 1961, the Soviets were also the first to send someone to successfully orbit the moon. The United States won the space race when they became the first to land on the moon in 1969. October 1957 - July 1969 The Space Race added to the intensity of competition between the United States and the Soviet Union. These two countries fought to show their power. This space competition allowed for these countries to not only test their military power but also their power in the scientific field.
