This little skirmish happened inTexas when the citizens ofAustin wanted their city to stay thecapital when Houston wanted tochange it to keep the archivessafe from Mexico. Summary December 1842: Houston called Congressand sent a company of rangers underCol. Thomas I. Smith and Capt. EliChandler to Austin with orders to take the archives, but with no death. Austin was notprepared for the raid, and the rangers loadedthe archives in wagons and drove away, butnot before a woman fired a cannon at them.
