Created with Fabric.js 1.4.5 Smog. What is it? Smog is fog or haze combined with smoke and other atmospheric pollutants. SMOG What causes smog, and how is smog formed? Some ground level ozone and tiny particles are released in the air due to reactions between volatile organic compounds (VOC), sulphur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx). These VOC, SO2 and NOx are called precursors. The main sources of these are pollutants released straight into the air by gasoline and diesel-run vehicles, industrial plants, and heating. Mainly directly linked to human activities. Why is smog an issue? It damages the ozone layer, and harms natural environments.Ozone can irritate the respiratory system. When this happens, you might start coughing, feel an irritation in your throat, and/or experience an uncomfortable sensation in your chest.Ozone can reduce the volume of air that you draw in when you take a full breath and the speed at which you are able to blow it out. Ozone can make it more difficult for you to breathe as deeply and vigorously as you normally would. Breathing is uncomfortable.Ozone can aggravate asthma and cause attacks that require a doctor’s attention or the use of additional medication. One reason this happens is that ozone makes people more likely to respond to allergens. What's the financial cost of smog? Scientists have spent up to 30 million to try to get the smog levels down. What is the current and future impact of smog?Smog can create acid deposits. For example acid rain, snow, fog, gas and dust. As smog reacts with water in the air, it creates acidic particles. These acidic substances are ending up in plants, soil and water deplete current nutrients, cause water pollution, which can affect plants and animals, damage buildings. The graph below shows one affect of smog around the globe, global warming. The more smog, the faster global warming happens. (The atmospheric temperature increases). The black is what we damage we have already done, and the red is a prediction of what damage will happen. Powerplants are one of the main producers of smog. tap and hold to changethis text! What are some actions we can use to keep smog at a minimum? On an every day basis we should conserve energy, recycle, plant trees, do not use paper and plastic bags, do not smoke. Where is smog produced?China produces the most smog out of any other place in the world! The USA is second in smog production, and Russia in the third.
