Along their journey Victor remembers the bond they had together when they were kids and makes him realize how bad he has treated Thomas over the years. They both shared a good memory with Victor's dad and his ashes symbolize respect Victor has for Thomas for going withhim on this trip and forgiving him when he should not be forgiven.
