She was taken into slavery at age seven then taken to North America. She was bought by the Wheatley family of Boston. They taught her how to read, write, and spell. At twelve she was reading Greek and Latin classics.She wrote her first published poem at age twelve, printed in Newport Mercury. The poem was a story about two men who almost died at sea. After her book was published and printed, she took a boat to London to advertise her book. When she came back to Boston her life changed importantly. She was freed from slavery but then devastated by the death of several Wheatley members.Phillis Wheatley married a freed African American man, John Peters. They had three kids who died when toddlers. Later she was forced to find work as a maid in a boarding house. She did continue to write poems, but by the start of the Revolutionary war it was hard to find excitement in her poems. As a strong supporter of Americas independence, she wrote several poems in honor of the continental army general, George Washington. Nobody knows if he ever read her work.Phillis Wheatley died unknown at age 31 alone in the boarding on December 5, 1784. Born in West Africa, 1753.
