Discuss: when something goes wrong what do you do? 1. To solve difficult problems, focus on the positive exception. 2. Choose to have a Growth Mindset (I can learn) rather than a Fixed Mindset(I have a set amount of ability) to overcome problems. 3. Choose a problem that the class/ school collectively faces. Work inpairs to propose a solution- focused plan. 1. In groups of 5, task teams to "tackle the problem of building a house of cards as quickly as possible". Distribute cards and set stopwatch. 2. An observer for each group notes what people say/ do/ ask as they go. Debrief. 3. Note the tricks/ solutions that worked. Task the teams to "choose a solution to focus on and try again" Time the teams. 1. Share an example of a student who believed they couldn't do maths. Focused on not being able, said 'why do I have to do this?' 2. Share how they discovered they could teach their little brother times tables. Changed the question. Can do it when they explain it out loud. 3. Solutions thinking is about looking at the solution not the problem. Changing your focus. 4. Create two charts- one for Problem and one for Solution. Discuss what say/ do/ ask/ feel when focus on each.
