Created with Fabric.js 1.4.5 In all of the darkness of our Universe there is even more darkness. There is a darkness that we cannot even see. It is called Dark Energy. Google defines Dark Energy as a theoretical repulsive force that counteracts gravity and causes the universe to expand at an accelerating rate. But what does this really mean? The definition given above means that Dark Energy has reverse effects on what what scientists thought years ago. In the 1990's, scientists thought that the universe was moving, but slowing down in the process. What they later found was that the Universe was actually accelerating, which went against basic physics. We knew that gravity existed and that gravity was a force that slowed things. And if the only force acting on our Universe's movement was gravity, how could we be accelerating.Scientists then figured that there was some kind of other force that made us go faster. They determined that the name for that force would be Dark Energy. Although Dark Energy May be a hard concept to understand, there are some easy ways of thinking about it.Our Observable Universe is the biggest thing that we can and may ever know. In fact, to get to the edge we would have to travel 46.5 billion light years. Our solar system is 2 light years wide. And since Dark Energy takes up 68% of our Universe, that means that Dark Energy is 15,810,000,000 times the width of our solar system. Another way to think of Dark Energy is this:Dark Energy is to the Universe as an engine is to a car.An engine keeps a car running. It can make the car keep accelerating.Dark Energy does the same thing with our Universe. It keeps it accelerating. One final thing to think about is the speed of the Universe. The Universe is expanding at a rate of 74.3 plus or minus 2.1 km.If that is too complicated think of it like this:The Universe is expanding at 30,800,000,000,000,000,000 km/sec/megaparsecond!
