Created with Fabric.js 1.4.5 WAKNUK In waknuk society people are discriminated against if they have anything wrong with them and they aren't createdin the image of God. We see this when David first met Sophie and he was remembering the definition of man,"and each leg shall be joined twice and have a foot and each foot five toes, each toe shall end with a flat nail... and so on until finally: And any creature that shall seem to be human, but is not formed thus is not human. it is neither man nor woman. It is a blasphemy against the true image of God, and Hateful in the sight of god" This picture represents a possible human deviation Similarities SCHIZOPHRENIA How those in Waknuk who are deviants are discriminated against: When a baby is born the local inspectorcomes to check the baby for any deviations.Once he is satisfied that the baby is human he issues a certificate of birth. If he doesn'tissue a certificate it means the baby has adefect and the baby has to be removed. We see this when Harriet brings her baby to see David's family because she is afraidthe baby will be taken away.Aunt Harriet said "this is the third time. They'll take my baby away like they took the others" "Why should you be afraid of us? We aren't hurting them This picture represents Sophie's feet with 6 toes We see another example of discrimination with Sophie. David finds out that Sophiehas six toes. This made impossible for Sophie to live in Waknuk, she wasn'tallowed to go to school and she didn'thave any friends other than David.Sophie and her family were forced to livein a house in the forest outside their townso she wouldn't be discovered. When Sophie's deformity was discoveredby Allen she and her family had to moveaway quickly because he wanted to report her to the inspectors. It wasn't only people with deformities that were discriminated against, the discrimination occurred with plantsand animals as well. Plants had to be perfect and so did animals. If the plantsweren't perfect they "would set fire tothe field" and if the animal wasn't perfectthey would slaughter it. This picture represents a mutant animal. It is a chicken with four legs. This picture represents where Waknuk is on a map. This picture represents the time in the book when uncle Axle had the big horses that Joseph didn't approve of.
