The word 'Islam' in Arabic means submission to the will of God. They come from Allah. (The Arabic word for god, a god, or the gods is Allah) It is the word used by Christians as well as Muslims in the Islamic world Though it is believed by non-Muslims to have originated in Mecca and Medina, Muslims believe that the religion of Islam has been present since the time of the prophet Adam. The prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him ), who was born in A.D. 570 at Mecca, in Saudi Arabia, is often regarded as the founder of Islam. He was the last prophet to be sent by Allah. However the first prophet was Adam. Most religious historians view Islam as having been founded in 622 CE by Muhammad the Prophet He lived from about 570 to 632 CE). The religion started in Mecca, when the angel Jibril (a.k.a. Jibreel; Gabriel in English) Sacred places in Islam, like Mecca and Medina, are very important. These cities are important in Islamic history, in part because they were important in the life of Muhammad. Because of this, these places are also important to present-day Muslims. Another cherished belief of the Muslims is the belief in angels as messengers of Allah. That concept in Islam differs little from the biblical view.Islam also holds a strong belief in the prophets, Mohammed being the greatest since he was sent to the entire world. Jesus is viewed as a prophet sent only to the Jews.As the Jews believed in the Old Testament and the Christians put their faith in both the Old and New Testaments, the Muslims believe the Quran* is the divine word of God. That book, containing the supposed revelations given to Mohammed, is divided into 114 chapters, or Suras. His followers wrote the Quran shortly after Mohammeds death. The Muslim building for communal worship is called a mosque. Muslims often refer to the mosque by its Arabic name, masjid. The word comes from the Arabic for "place of prostration". Islamic doctrine holds that human existence continues after the death of the human body in the form of spiritual and physical resurrection. There is a direct relation between conduct on earth and the life beyond. The afterlife will be one of rewards and punishments which is commensurate with earthily conduct. A Day will come when God will resurrect and gather the first and the last of His creation and judge everyone justly. People will enter their final abode, Hell or Paradise. Faith in life after death urges us to do right and to stay away from sin. In this life we sometimes see the pious suffer and the impious enjoy. All shall be judged one day and justice will be served. The Islamic new year is celebrated relatively quietly, with prayers and readings and reflection upon the hegira.Mawlid al-Nabi (12 Rabi 1): Prophet Muhammad's BirthdayThis holiday celebrates the birthday of Muhammad, the founder of Islam.
