There are 3 types of irritable bowel syndrome, IBS with diarrhoea, IBS with constipation or IBS with both constipation and diarrhoea. So it can affect the digestive system by speeding up or slowing down the ending stages of the digestive process. Irritable bowel syndrome affects the digestive system as well as the muscular system in the bowel. It can cause unexpected and elongated extractions on the colon, and can make nerve endings more sensitive, causing the "irritable" in irritable bowel syndrome. Even though IBS can be confused with many other diseases recent studies show that, in the absence of alarm signs, barely any (if any at all) tests have to be performed. Although if suspicious symptoms are showing, the following tests should be performed:- A colon examination (if over the age of 50, and hasn't previously had a colon examination, a colonoscopy should be performed, to check for polyps or possible cancer. For those with mostly diarrhoea, and biopsies can be taken to determine if microscopic colitis or inflammation)- A blood test for Celiac Disease (develops in people that are gluten intolerant, and can be confused with IBS but is treated differently)- A lactose breath test (to confirm a possible lactose intolerance) There is no specific treatment for IBS, but pain relievers, laxatives, and anti-diarrhoea medicines can be issued to relieve the symptoms of IBS.
