A common weapon made was the fire lance, an ancestor of the gun. It used gunpowder and helped make the Chinese army a strong force. The chinese also used gunpowder to make fireworks. In chinese gunpowder is called huo yao. Also it was first invented inadvertently by alchemists while attempting to make an elixir of immorality. Movable type was also very useful in ancient China. These improved the art of printing. These were blocks put in certain patterns to make printed designs or messages and then printed on paper to create items such as posters. These were inspired by engraved name seals. The Chinese people started making these inventions around 600 A.D. Silk was a very important aspect in ancient China. It was traded throughout China and the lands beyond it and the trade route where it was traded commonly was named after it. It is called The Silk Road. The silk road is now very known through out the world and is 4,000 miles long The Tang farming improvements were significant to life as we know it. They had lots of land and were able to make many advances because of it such as improved irrigation, rice that grew well in poor soil, and tea which became a popular drink in China and around the world. China also discovered Coal and Steel in the Tang dynasty. These were essential for every day things such as cooking food, warming up a house, creating armor, weapons, helmets and other similar items. At one point wood was becoming scarce in China, and so they needed something new to heat their homes and cook food. They figured out that coal could heat furnaces to high temperatures. Painting was another great achievement of Song China.
