Cortes was the mayor of Santiago, Cuba.~ He married a Spanish women named Catalina Juarez.~ He gained wealth, land, and slaves. ~ Cortes left in 1519 to the coast of Yucatan, Mexico with ten ships, about 500 soldiers, ten brass cannons, and sixteen horses. ~ The native people had never seen ships, cannons, or horses.~The horses frightened the native people.~ The horses where unknown in the new world. ~ the ruler Montezuma.~ ruler of Tenochitatlan. ~ The priest of the new world told Cortes about the Aztec Empire.~ Tenochitatlan the capital of the Aztec Empire was filled with riches.~ August sixteenth 1519 began the 250 mile march into the Aztec capital.~ The soilder fought and won many battles using weapons and horses helped defeat 1,000 Indian warriors.~ The Aztecs believed Cortes was their God.~ Cortes renamed it Mexico City. ~ King made him the governor and captain general of Mexico. ~ Cortes was a hero to Spanish soldiers ~Cortes meets Doña Marina.~ Doña Marina is the daughter of a powerful Indian chief.~ She was sold into slavery when her father died.~ She spoke the Aztec language, new the Aztec customs, and and helped Cortes conquer the Aztec empire.~She became Cortes interpreter and teacher. ~ Valazquez was jealous of Cortes so he took Cortes land and slaves in Cuba and Hispaniola.~King of Spain was also jealous so he gave Cortes me tittles and Honors but took away his political power.~ Hernado Cortes died a poor man on December second 1547.
