Henrietta was born intopoverty on a tobacco farm in Virginia in1921. Later, Henrietta movedto Baltimore County and worked for a factory but still lived a meagerexistence. Then in 1951, she was diagnosed with cervical cancer. Henrietta wentto Johns Hopkins Hospital in Maryland and doctors took a sample of her tumor (biopsy).It was sent it to a lab built to culture cells, but until this time, there was neverany success to keep cells alive outside the body. The owner soon found that thecancerous cells could multiply indefinitely and double every 24 hours.Despite treatment, Henrietta's cancer grew worse. Henrietta Lacks died onOctober 4th, 12:15 am 1951. Her cells soon became the cells that were used incell culture and used in experiments around the world. Her cells even received a special name"HeLa cells."The cells helped create a vaccine for polio and many other diseases.
