The "Secret Six" included Abraham Woodhull, Agent 355, Robert Townsend, James Rivington, Austin Roe, and Caleb Brewster. However, another patriot, Benjamin Tallmadge, put the ring together, though he wasn't a member of the actual spy ring. The use of special invisible inkand a specific number code inventedby Tallmadge set the ring off on a good start. Eventually, Washington realizedthat he wasn't very satisfied the intelligence he was recieving from thering-- it was mostly repeated information. Because of the lack of informationable to be gathered, the spy ring came to a halt. Of course, this was until the French arrived. With thisimportant factor, the ring kicked into action again. What Washington did NOT know, however, was that a certain Benedict Arnold had marriedloyalist Peggy Shippen and had moved to the British side. With the help of the ring, Washington realized this and attempted to capture Arnold (meanwhile, Arnold's British helper, John Andre,is hanged for being found with letters from Arnold to the British concerning Americanforts), but Arnold escapes to Virginia, whereWashington knows he will not cause troubleresuting in the revealing of his spy ring. Agent 355 is captured by the British, leaving Townsend depressed. Finally, after Rivington gives the French a Britishnaval code book he found lying in his shop, the British are defeated at Yorktown, and the British stop all attacks. The waris ended officially after the signing of the Treaty of Paris in 1783. Brian Kilmeade and Don Yaeger "Washington did not really outfight the British, he simply outspied us!" ~Major George Beckwith, British Intelligence Officer 1782-1783 QUOTE RATIONALE-I chose this quote as a thorough representation of this book because, in truth, this quote is rather accurate.George Washington and his troops were not nearly as supplied as the British with their battle gear, so during the introductory years of the war, they lost the majority of their battles. This often was the case until GeorgeWashington put together a spy ring that gave him insight on the British battle plans and strategies. Thisshows that, in truth, the only reason that Washington and the patriots really won the war because ofintelligence-- NOT fighting. double click to changethis text!
