Created with Fabric.js 1.4.5 Genetically Modified Organisms Good or Bad Genetically modified organisms are organisms (GMOs) that have been genetically altered. Biotechnologyand bio-engineering is the process of taking genes and transfering them from one organism to another. "FDA Regulates the safety of foods and foodproducts from plant sources including foodfrom genetically engineered plants."~U.S. Food and Drug Administration "USDA supports the safe and appropriate use of scienceand technology, including biotechnology, to help meetagricultural challenges and consumer needs of the21st century."~U.S. Department of Agriculture Genetically Modified Organisms? The American Academy of Environmental Medicine (AAEM) thinks that genetically modified foods have not beenproperly tested for human consumption and there is evidence of probable harm. They think that Physiciansshould educate their patients on probable harm, and doctors should be aware of GMOs and the potential fordiseases. "The foods we have evaluated through theconsultation process have not been morelikely to cause an allergic or toxic reactionthan foods from traditionally bred plants."~Food and Drug Administration This chart shows the percentageof GMOs in America. I think that the amount of GMOs that are being farmedmeans they are safe because a big percentage of thecrops being farmed are GMOs. I would have to agree with the World Health Organization when they say "GM foods currently available on theinternational market have passed safety assessments and are not likely to present risks for human health."I think that if there were any serious health concerns for humans they would have been discovered becauseof how many GMOs are being produced. Monsanto, a sustainable agriculture company, says "GMO crops undergo more testing and oversight than anyother agricultural products, and, the safety of biotech crops is well-established by hundreds of studies andyears of real-world experience." Also, they say they "confirm there are no health concerns from the gene orthe protein produced by the gene." In conclusion I think that GMOs are safe enough to eat, but I would like to encourage there are tests that likediseases to GMOs, and the proper administraters should look into assessing GMOs in their entirety.
