Created with Fabric.js 1.4.5 Feuda lism King Nobles Knights Peasants A political system based on reciprocal relationships between lords who owned land and vassals who protect the land and lord or king. Feudalism was an economic system based on land, rights, obligations and depended on farming. This system of landholding and government began in 911 in Europe was under attack by invaders. Claimed ownership of land, granted land, or fiefs, to nobles and knights. The nobles then pledged their loyalty and to serve/protect the king. They had the right of taking tolls on imports and exports. Received fiefs from the King and in return they protected him. They would have to serve in the King's armies. Less powerful than nobles. The King also granted them land if they agreed to fight in his army and protect him. They followed a code of chivalry which means to be courteous, brave and loyal. Worked on the land. They did not own land, they belonged to land and couldn't leave without permission. In exchange for working and living on his land, The Lord offered them protection. The King and lord took most of the crops the peasants grew for themselves. They were heavily taxed and even taxed for marriage. Peasant life expectancy was 35 because they usually did not have enough food to live a long time. Statuses determined a person's prestige and power. Vast majority of population were peasants. No social mobility-people could not move their way up this pyramid. Women! Confined to household chores. Fought in battles. Some had occupations: blacksmith, merchant. Some became nuns. Worked in fields or took on arts. Oratores: Those Who Pray Bellatores: Those Who Fight Laborares: Those Who Work Many Medieval people used this to order their society because it represents the people's roles, not their wealth. Effects: Caused many different forms of constitutional government to emerge. New ideas led to resistance to and defiance of the feudal lord. Rights and developments of early representative institutions emerged. Good outcomes but not a good government to use. A bad government because 80% of population did not own land, they just worked (peasants). The peasants had no rights and were basically slaves. This government declined when trade and the use of money became more popular.
