ECEP 232 Working With Families Based on my learning in the Early Childhood Education program, and more specifically in ECE 232 Communicating with Families, I have gained an understanding of the different resources available to support families and how these resources are acquired in order to achieve equitable distribution. For instance, the Good Shepherd Ministries, which was one of the organizations presented in the ECEP 232 Families course, receives donations from the community and distributes these donations to the homeless men who come in to the shelter. Some of these resources are in the form of clothing, food, and counseling services. Moreover, my experience at my placement agency also reflects the use of community resources to provide valuable space for community members and small business owners. At my placement agency (school), they regularly set a date every few months where they go to a community centre (Scarborough Storefront) where they are able to have celebrations for children’s birthdays. The staff at our school informed me at our school that this community centre (Scarborough Storefront) offers the use of their kitchen facilities for free to community members who need a place to prepare food in large amounts and/or small business owners who perhaps need a place to bake cookies or goods and sell them to get started. This is a reflection of how the resources (kitchen and cooking materials) from a community centre can impact communities (schools) and individuals (small business owners) in need. The artifact I have selected is a powerpoint presentation on another organizationthat provides valuable resources to families who have children with special needs - Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital. This powerpoint was used by ourgroup when we presented Holland Bloorview as an agency supporting families in the community.
