It is almost a signature for the Wingfield family. Characters in the play have difficult, depressing lives, so they choose to escape them with other activities. Music, movies, memories and a glass menagerie- these are just some of the things the Wingfields use to cover over their problems and avoid reality. This idea of escape in the play stems from mental health, as well as feelings of confinement, obligation, frustration, and stress.
