James Oglethorpe idea of the colony was to create a place of opportunity for the poor to start a new life, as well as for any persecuted prisoners. To the east of Georgia was the Atlantic Ocean. South of Georgia was a island called Savannah river. Which was where Oglethorpe and settlers set up. The settlement was named after the river. Georgia had a large amount of fresh and saltwater. It also had natural lake mountains and long coastal plains. Settlers were farmers,growing tobacco,indigo and rice. Though slave labor had been originally prohibited,it was later introduced in order to keep up with the demand in the large plantations.
