South American Disputes The leader of Cuba was originally Batista but got overthrown by Fidel Castro. United States tried to land a counterassault at the Bay of Pigs and failed. The Soviets then began to build missiles in Cuba known as the Cuban Missile Crisis. In Nicaragua, the dictator was Anastasio Somoza. Countries split in Asia There was the Korean War, Vietnam War, and the Chinese Civil War in Asia. The Vietnam war was between Ngo Dinh Diem and Ho Chi Minh with the help of the Vietcong. Even with the help of the UN and General MacArthur, Ho Chi Minh still won the Vietnam War. The Chinese Civil War was between Mao and Jiang Jie Shi. Mao won and started the Cultural Revolution and the Great Leap Forward. However, the person representing "China" in the United Nations, peacekeepers of the world, was Jiang Jie Shi. In Mao's reign Nixon visited China and wanted to start his policy of a détente.
