Saigon was renamed Ho Chi Minh City. many refugees fled by boat, numerous died. Cambodia (Kampuchea) was taken over by the Khmer Rouge which set up a leardership lead by Pol Pot. Vietnam invaded and over threw him. U.N. peacekeepers kept careful track of their withdraw. The third world consisted of developing nations that were independent from the conflict. Latin America, Africa, and Asia is where these countries existed. The CIA and KGB spied and even did assassinations. The Soviets aided Egypt and India. The Indonesia hosted the Bandung Conference where they formed the nonaligned nations. In Cuba, Bastista was overthrown by Fidel Castro. He nationalized the economy and took U.S. owned sugar mills and refineries. Cuba was embargoed by the U.S. The Bay of Pigs invasion failed. Khrushchev put missiles in Cuba. John F. Kennedy set up a blockade. Antastasion Somoza's son was toppled. The Sadinistas rebels were lead by Daniel Ortega. They helped rebels in El Salvador. The U.S then supported the Contras in the Nicaraguan Civil War. Violeta Chamorro defeated Ortega in the first elections. Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlavi tried to modernize Iran.. He allowed Western oil companies in. Prime Minister Muhammed Mossadeq tried to overthrow him but failed. Ayatollah Khomeini dislike secular rule and encourage riots. In 1979 the U.S. Embassy was stormed in Tehran. Hostages were taken by Muslim radicals. Saddam Hussein of Iraq fought Iran in a war. The Soviets invaded Afghanistan. The Muslims revolted and some formed the Mujaheddin. U.S. President Carter warned against any attacks on the Persian Gulf. Grain shipments to the Soviet Union were stopped and the U.S. boycotted the Moscow Olympics. Mikhail Gorbachev withdrew Soviet forces from Afghanistan.
