Created with Fabric.js 1.4.5 Molecular Compounds Ionic Compounds vs Kaitlyn O'Connell Period 4 Ionic compounds are compounds that contain ionic bonds between oppositelycharged metalsand nonmetals-transfer ofelectrons. Molecular compounds are a neutral group of atoms held by a covalent bond between two nonmetals-sharing of electrons. Naming ionic compounds-cation first, anion next and ends with suffix -ide.Examples- potassiumphosphide, sodium chloride. Naming molecularcompounds-elements listed in order and prefixes tell the number of atoms.Example- CO: carbon monoxide, Formula- Write cationfirst, then anion.Cross charges and simplify. Ionic Compound Molecular Compound Formula- Write elementsin order and use the prefix as the subscript. Properties- solid at room temperature, does not conduct electricity as a solid, conducts electricity as liquid and dissolved in water. Properties- each element has 8 valence electrons except hydrogen, low boiling and melting points, and not conductive. Examples/Uses- Sodium chloride( table salt), calcium chloride (salt used to melt ice),and lithium iodide used in batteries. Examples/Uses-Dihydrogen monoxide(water), carbon dioxide(CO2), N2O(dinitrogen monoxide) which is laughing gas. Works Cited"3.5: Ionic Compounds." Ionic Compounds. CK-12 Foundation, 2015.
