Pass the Cheerios! History of Cheerios In the first year alone, CheeriOats sold over 1.8 million cases, each case containing 12 boxes of CheeriOats. CheeriOats were invented in 1941 by Lester Borchardt and manu-factured by General Mills. Cheerios that are manufactured in the General Mills plant in New York, are shipped to the eastern coast of the US and eastern Canada.Four years later, the name was changed to Cheerios and the name still stands today. Since the beginning of Cheerios, the commercials have used cartoon characters to try to gain a child target audience. A few of these characters are Bullwinkle, Hoppity Hooper, and Buzz. Although Cheerios have been around for so long, and are a favorite choice of cereal for many, theyhave a small history.
