Created with Fabric.js 1.4.5 The Waknuk People and the Catholic Church Similarities Different Background The Crysalids is a book about a society that wants all the people to be normal. However, in the world of the Crysalids, the world is always changing. The story describes a terrible event known as the Tribulations, which destroyed most of the world. Only a small amount of the people survived on the planet, and this story is about one group of these people who live in Waknuk. The people in Waknuk follow a religion that teaches that the Tribulations were a punishment for not being like God, so the people of Waknuk try to be like god by following a religion that teaches that man needs to be normal and not a mutant. However, mutations are caused everywhere and the people who are born different, or deviated, need to be thrown out of society. This story is about David, a boy that is born different and his fight to survive in Waknuk. The Catholic Church is one of the oldest religions in the world. This religion follows the teachings of Christianity which follows a book called the bible. The Catholics believe that their teachings are the only true teachings about god. In this faith, god wants people to be heterosexual, and homosexual are evil because the bible teaches that homosexual people should be killed. Although Catholics do not teach people to kill homosexuals anymore and wants homosexuals to be Catholics too, the Catholic Church teaches that LGBT people cannot show their love with their bodies with each other. Basically, the Catholic Church teaches that LGBT people need to stay celibate all of their lives because their sexual orientation is wrong Catholics Find Transgendered and Homosexual People Dangerous Clearly, there are similarities between the Waknuk and the Catholic Church. First it is easy to see a similarity between their viewpoints against the people who are not normal. In the Chrusalids, it shows how the people of Waknuk see people who are different as dangerous through the character of old Jacob, who think buring the people that are different is good. " Repentence says to keep pure the stock of the Lord by fire, but thats not good enugh for the bloody Government now. Give me the old days when a man was allowed to do his duty and keep place clean. Heading right for another does of Tribulation we are now." (89)In most recent news, the leader of the Catholic Church, Pope Francis II, made similar comments connecting transgendered people and nuclear weapons. In one of his recent public speeches, Francis side that: Those that manipulate' their bodies are similar to 'Herods' that 'destroy, that plot designs of death, that disfigure the face of man and woman, destroying creation. (Morgan, 2015, para 2)Here, the leader of the Catholic faith compares transgendered people with the destroyers of nature and those who might destroy the face of the natural order. Catholics and the People of Wuknuk Try to Eliminate the Visibility of LGBT People and the Deniations from the worldThe main point of the Chrysalids is that David and his telepath friends need to be under fear of the Fringes. In other words, those in the Wuknuk society that do not fit in are pushed to the Fringes of society and are not allowed to be as normals. The Catholic Church often pushes LGBT people into the fringes by denying their basic rights to be visible and celebrate their identity. For example, Pope John Paul II expressed a bitterness about a gay pride festival held in Rome during Roman Catholic Holy Year. In this way, the Catholic Church tried to force the government to reduce the visibility of gay people in society. Just like the people of Waknuk put the people who are different in badland, the Catholic Church tries to push LGBT people out of visible society and into the fringes of society. The Waknuk Society and the Catholics Church doesn't let the people who are different and the LGBT people to CommunicateIn Chrysalids, David and his friends are bullied because they have a power to communicate that cannot be controlled by the Waknuk society. Moreover, their existence is a threat because they have existed as members of the society without anyone knowing. The fear of the Waknuk people is shown through their cruelty towards Sally and Katherine, who are given unusually harsh treatment after being identifies as deviations: "Usually, if a Deviation gets clear of a district they let him go.... Weve been living among them for over twenty years and they didnt suspect it.. "(130)The torture of Katherine showed the desperation of the Waknuk people against the threat of a population of others among their own kind. The murder of Sally and Katherine afterwards was a way for ever. Similarly, the Catholic Church shows intolerance against the voices of LGBT people among the followers of the Catholic Church. For example, during the 2008 World Youth Day, an online discussion about homosexuality was shut down because the Catholic youth were not unanimous in support of the Popes position on homosexuality as intrinsically disordered. (Contributor, 2008, Star Observer) In other words, when the members of the Catholic community try to communicate their opinions about homosexuality in a way that is not supported by the church, they are silenced. The People Who Are Judged and the Extreme of JudgmentIn the Chrysalids, anyone who does not appear to be normal is considered a deviant. They are considered to be evil, and deserve to be thrown out of the village. For example, early in the book, Sophies parents had to keep her hidden. When she was found out, she was thrown out of the village. However, the Catholic Church does not have such a strong opinion against LGBT people. The Catholic Church believes that sexual orientation and acts are two distinct things. (Contributor, para 3). Also, the Church wants to keep LGBT people as part of their church but expects them to live a life ofchastity (para 1). In other words, the Catholic Church wants LGBT people to believe in their religious ideas by being single all of their lives and not expressing their love with anyone for the rest of their lives. The Waknuk Peoples Society is a Government, but the Catholic Church is a Religion that is Not a Part of the GovernmentIn the Chrysalids, the religion that people believe in is the same as the government. For example, after Sophie runs away from Waknuk, the inspector and Davidsfather argue about what will happen to David from a religious point of view. Religion and government in Waknuk areone thing. However, the Catholic Church is a religion and not the same as a government. Waknuk Catholic Church
