Learning disabilities can affect an individual's life beyond academics, impact relationships with family and friends Facts/Statistics* Fifteen percent of the U.S. population, or one in seven Americans, has some type of learning disability, according to the National Institutes of Health.* Difficulty with basic reading and language skills are the most common learning disabilities. As many as 80% of students with learning disabilities have reading problems.* Learning disabilities often run in families Causes of Learning Disabilities A very premature birth. Mother's illness during pregnancy. The mother drinking during pregnancy, for example Foetal Alcohol Syndrome. A debilitating illness or injury in early childhood affecting brain development, for example a road traffic accident or child abuse. Signs/Symptoms * Difficulty with reading comprehension or math skills* Trouble with open-ended test questions and word problems* Dislikes reading and writing; avoids reading aloud* Spells the same word differently in a single document* Poor organizational skills (bedroom, homework, desk is messy and disorganized)* Trouble following classroom discussions and expressing thoughts aloud* Poor handwriting This disorder can be treated by an Occupational Therapist or Speech and Language Therapist. Occupational therapist treat injured, ill, or disabled patients through the therapeutic use everyday activities. They help these patients develop, recover, and improve the skills neede for a daily living and working.
