Abigail describes this as a double edged sword. On one hand being the head librarian means she has the freedom to make executive decisions regarding the organization, lay out and acquisition of new books into the collection. On the reverse side the lack of secondary or joint librarians means that some hard decisions or choices have to be made without the input of other professionals. Past librarian often took books that were not needed or not in the scope of the collection focus. Her first task when she was hired in the fall of 2013 what to cull through the libraries holdings and weed out the duplicate, damaged, and that were appropriate to the libraries focus. The removal of books has political and social implications and it is important to complete this project with respect and careful attention to the needs of the libraries patrons. Space Planning and organization Instruction: teaching the public of all ages how to navigate library systems:knowing that the knowledge gained in her library will translate to all libraries. Abigail is a passionate librarian who sees a bright future for information professionals who are willing to step out from behind the desk and become advocates for the libraries they love. It is the job of everyone who works in a library to change the way the value of these public spaces are quantified and justified in budgets. Shifting away from the statistical quantification and towards quality, service driven experiences for the public will be the key to the success of libraries in the future.
