However, in the United States, most students do not begin to learn another language until ninth grade, or the age of fourteen. "Children show a better mental flexibility, more creativity, divergent thinking skills, and improved listening and memory skills, kids are able to process language early on (Grace Chen). "Studies have shown an association with gray matter density (or volume and intellect), especially in areas of language, memory, and attention. The brain has two types of tissue visible to the naked eye, termed gray and white matter. Brain imagingshowed that bilingual speakers had densergray matter compared with monolingual participants" (Miranda Hitti). "In the USA, bilingual pay is often between five and 20% more than that of a similar monolingualposition. Despite these clear advantages of being bilingual, only 18 per cent of Americans are actually able to speak a second language"(TMI Paris). International Competition "To be competitive on a global scale, the business world of tomorrow needs individuals who can work in a culturally diverse environment and who have strong skills in a foreign language...when attempting to market their products abroad" (Bernadette Morris). "Learning a second language has been correlated with improved reading ability in sixth-graders, to improved scores on the ACT and SAT, and academic success in college for high school students"(Great Schools Staff). "Research has shown that children who have studied a foreign language in elementary school achieve higher scores on standardized tests in reading, language arts, and mathematics than those who have not"(Bernadette Morris). Why foreign language program funding is essential for the U.S. Jenna Humphrey P4A
