The airline suffered high losses over the years due to poor management and fuel price increases. The majority shareholder is Penerbengan Malysia Berhad with a 52.0% stake. The airline knows a number of financial fluctuations due to unprofitable routes, rising fuel costs and mismanagement.On February 2013, a net profit of RM51.4 million was reported, attributable to its route rationalization programme. In 2014, Malaysia Airlines lost two Boeings 777 aircraft within 131 days,with a total of 537 passengers and crew lost. Flight 370 disappeared in an unknown location on March 8. Flight 17 crashed near Donetsk in Ukraine on July 17, after it was believed to been shot out of the air. After the first plane loss, the airline saw a loss of RM307.04 million. Following the loss of Flight 17, there was a spike in crew resignations. There have been claims that as many as 500 cabin crew have resigned. On 29 August, Khazanah released a report which outlines their plan for the restructuring of the MAS and the process of completing the takeover. About 6,000 jobs (30% of the workforce) will be eliminated and the carriersroute network will be shrunk to focus on regional destinations rather than unprofitable long-haul routes. Khazanah plans to de-list the airline from Malaysias stock exchange by the end of 2014 and plans to return it to profitability by late 2017, re-listing the airline by 2018 or 2019.
