It is considered to be the shortest water link between Europe and Asia without navigating around Africa. • The first modern attempt to build the canal came in the late 1700’s • The Universal Suez Ship Canal Company formed and was given the right to begin building the artificial canal on April 25th, 1859 • Ten years later, on November 17th,1869, the canal was completed at a cost of 100 million •In 1876, major improvements were made on the size of the canal and the Suez Canal grew into one of the world’s most heavily traveled shipping lanes. Opening of the Suez Canal •Today, the Tolls paid by the ships are an important source of income for the Egyptian government. • February 10th, 2015 - Egypt’s president, Abdel Fattah Al Sisi, discusses the Suez Canal Corridor Development project. The project consists of 3 stages ; expansion of the canal, establishing an industrial zone to host many industries, and setting up a “Technology Valley” that is the center of technology, commerce and tourism. Sisi also talks about how the Egyptian people played a role in the funding and he invites Russian investors to take part in the project for investment benefits. •Egypt’s president announces that there will be another Suez Canal considered as "New Egypt"•During the unavailing of the plans for the second Suez Canal fighter planes flew to mark this event. •It is the longest canal in the world without locks •The accidents are very few compared with other waterways • Navigation goes day and night.
