Created with Fabric.js 1.4.5 Temperate Deciduous forests are located in various area around the world. Between the equator and the two Poles, they are found in Eastern North America, parts of Canada, West Europe, China, Japan, Russia, Southeast Australia, New Zealand and a small area in South America. KEY Temperate deciduous forestWhole Country The five subdivided forest vegetation zones (dependent on the height of the vegetation) The first zone is the Tree Stratum Zone possessing the tallest and largest trees. They can grow up to 18-30 meters and include a large variety such as elm, chestnut, basswood, maple, oak, sweet gum and more. The second zone is the small tree or sapling zone, which is the vegetation stated in its zone name. The third zone named after its flora; a shrub like vegetation such as mountain laurel, huckleberry, azaleas, etc. The fourth is named the herb zone because of the short plants which introduces this zone. Lasty, the ground zone which generally includes different species of mosses or lichens. The main vegetation type in a deciduous forest is distinguished by a range of deciduous trees. The word deciduous means ''falling off at maturity'' or ''tending to fall off''. This refers to how this type of tree looses its broad leaves seasonally. The trees leaves in this forest develop into warm colours; from yellow, orange, red or brown during autumn. During winter they eventually diminish, while in the spring months vegetation becomes plentifulcreating a healthy summer. This forest has four seasons due to the warm and cold air masses which causes cold, dry winters and hot, wet summers. The vegetation has created its own adaptive ability to survive different climates, hazards and seasons.Production and maintenance of a trees' leaves requires a great deal of energy, so leaves have to be shed to stay alive. In winter the vegetation goes into 'dormancy' a bit like hibernation. It uses its thick bark and sap in its roots to protect itself from freezing. There are 6 months of growing season for vegetation. Leaves begin to fade from their usual green colour because production of chlorophyll halts. Plant life/Flora Animals/Fauna Animals from small to large must have adaptive abilities to inhabit this vast forest. The vegetation provides food, shelter, warmth and water for them. Most animals have camouflage techniques to hunt or hide from prey or predator. Still, some can not survive this terrain and its obstacles such as insects, which will use their last energy to lay eggs in order to keep their kind alive. Before food is scarce, animals use the method of storage of food and hibernation to survive the long winter months . While most birds migrate to warmer climates such as the tropics. The kinds of animals you can find vary to the forests' location around the world. They include tawny owls, salamanders, black bear, wolves, deer and a variety of rodents and insects.Carnivores feed on other organisms in the forest to survive and rely on the vegetation/food for its prey to feed on, the herbivores, to remain a good population.
