THE SLAVE TRADE - The slave trade compromise restricted the number of slave representation and taxation to only 3/5 of slaves.- Prohibited the congresss from outlawing slavery before 1808. - Those in the northern states wanted to end slavery, but those in the southern states found owning slaves necessary to keep up with their economy. Transatlantic Slave Trade - The Trade Triangle- The voyage across the Atlantic which was for 6 to 8 weeks, which is known as The Middle Passage. - Those who survived on the ships throughout the journey were loaded off the ships and put to work as slaves. - Calling it the Triangle because only three continents were involved. These continents were European capital, African labor and American land. Atlantic Slave Trade- The Portuguese were the first to engage in the New World slave trade in the 16th century, and others soon followed.- Took place across the Atlantic Ocean from the 16th through to the 19th centuries. - The South Atlantic economic system centered on producing crops, and making goods and clothing to sell in Europe, andincreasing the numbers of Africanslaves brought to the New World.- The slave trade is sometimes called the Maafa by African and African- American scholars, meaning "great disaster" in Swahili.
