George Washington sent French troops to stop Cornwallis from taking control of the bay. Soon 14 British ships headed to New York then continued to Chesapeake. Admiral Comte de Grasse had 27 ships that lined Chesapeake waiting for the British.The British arrived on September 5th but waited to attack until the next day so that the French could cut their ropes and get ready to fight. The shots ceased at 6:30 and the ships sailed east for 4 days with no shots fired. On september 9th Grasse reversed his sails and went back to Chesapeake without the British and found 7 more ships for reinforcement. Cornwall then could not escape and surrendered 14 days later. Outcome Around the end of valley forge it was a key base for the colonists and a cause of victoryfor the war On both sides there were about 320 casualties the british ships werevery damaged and couldn’t continue fighting. Even though there was no actual winner of the war, French took it as a victory for their strategies & how they ran the British out of Chesapeake.
