Created with Fabric.js 1.4.5 The Art of Writing: Progression or Stagnation? Philosophy cant be taught in writing;it can only be felt, experienced, arguedout and sensed. Socrates thought: Writing is unfortunately like painting; for the creations of the painter have the attitude of life, and yet if you ask them a question they preserve a solemn silence. And the same may be said of speeches. You would imagine that they had intelligence, but if you want to know anything and put a question to one of them, the speaker always gives one unvarying answer. And when they have been once written down they are tumbled about anywhere among those who may or may not understand them, and know not to whom they should reply, to whom not: and, if they are maltreated or abused, they have no parent to protect them; and they cannot protect or defend themselves. Real knowledge can only be gathered via dialog: a give and take of questions and answers where ideas are interrogated until the knowledge is truly understood.. Writing makes the brain forgetful and it makesyour mind complacent. Author should be present to defend his writing Writing does not give truth:it only gives the semblance of truth Writing cannot be used as a sort of standalone memorybank because people who read a text will only have a partial understanding of the authors meaning, andtherefore should notbe taken seriously. But consider this! Writing last far longer than oral traditions! double click to change this header text! It is easier to share information via text Written word cannot be altered as easily as memory can- instead of a vague recollection of a speech we can have it word for word recorded on paper. Widespread writing = Widespread literacy Texts can be interpreted by different people in different ways:While this can sometimes be a bad thing it actually often be great and inspire someone to try different things.
