Summary of Events Even though there wasn't a battle that occurred at Valley Forge this is still a very important in what happened during the Revolutionary War. Valley Forge was from December 19, 1777 to June 19, 1778. The soldiers at Valley Forge were led there by General George Washington so that they could watch over General Howe’s British army. The soldiers were becoming sick and weak, but because of the weather no resources were able to be brought to them. Food was starting to run out and most soldiers were being exposed to the harsh cold from tearing clothes and losing their clothes. It wasn't until March when supplies were able to go to Valley Forge to help them heal up and eat a good meal. Once it had it exactly six months of the extreme experience in Valley Forge the army and George Washington had decided to go back to New Jersey as an army other than a rebellion they had started as. Washington’s troops were tired of having the Patriots lose against the British, so Washington devised a plan. On Christmas night, his troops crossed the icy Delaware river and snuck up behind a group of partying Hessians, careful not to be seen. Washington’s troops stayed hidden until the next day. The Hessians were not feeling great, having partied the night before. Then at about eight in the morning, Washington’s troops sprung the surprise attack, capturing 1,000 Hessians. This is when the Patriots finally weren’t losing anymore and it sure made a statement to Britain. Works Cited5. Head, David. "Hessians." George Washington's Mount Vernon.
